Stuff and Such

I don’t really have much to say right now, or at least nothing’s coming to mind.

It might have to do with the face that I’m stuck in a basement.

I have a site visit today for one of my classes (Historic Preservation Practice Methods), so I had to rearrange my office hours for my TA class. Another TA is already occupying the TA’s office so I’ve exiled myself to on of the HP rooms in the basement.

The site visit will be cool. It’s an old mill (turn of the century or thereabouts) that a developer is turning in to office space. He already has a preservation consultant, but for the purposes of our class, we’re prentending that he’s hired us for the job. Basically we get to crawl around the building, take pictures of the current conditions, and then write up a tax credit application outlining the work that will be done and how it should be done.

Ok, well, I think it’s cool.

Other than that, I made some phone calls today to try to set up meetings in and around Charleston, WV so I can travel there on spring break to gather info for another class (Contemporary Preservation Policy). My paper will be on efforts to nominate Blair Mountain to the National Register of Historic Places.

If you don’t know about Blair Mt., it would be worth learning about. Google ‘battle of blair mountain’.  If you don’t know about the national register of historic places, that’s worth knowing about too. Google away, my friends.

This afternoon, I’ll probably be spending a good bit of time over at the Library Research Annex looking for information on turn of the century (the 1800’s to 1900’s turn, that is) railroad grad crossings. Yup, you guessed it: another assignment for another class. (History on the Land)

It’s lots of work, but it’s terribly interesting.

And then it’ll be the weekend and I’ll probably eat unhealthy food, drink too many beers, and stay up too late.

Ahhh, perfect.

  1. Charleston, WV is a great little town. I went there in 2004 when I interviewed for a clerkship on the Fourth Circuit (didn’t get it – boohoo). Anyway, its a cool town. Let me know when you’re going; maybe I can ride out with you. I’d love to go back.
